Radolfzell – an engaging city by Lake Constance
The foundation of “Cella Ratoldi” by Bishop Radolf of Verona marked the birth of one of the most attractive cities by Lake Constance. History and tradition meet in this cosmopolitan and vibrant centre situated in a unique and stunning location at the western end of Lake Constance. The car-free old part of the city invites the visitor to wander down picturesque lanes and past historical buildings and the late Gothic cathedral. Festivals steeped in tradition, such as the “Hausherrenfest” in honour of the city’s patrons and the “Mooser Wasserprozession” (Moos Boat Procession), demonstrate that the city’s history is still very much alive today.
Holidaymakers are drawn to the city with its long lake promenade and the rural charm of its six districts. An area that was once a source of inspiration to the poet Joseph Victor von Scheffel is now a place of recuperation and recovery for numerous, sometimes prominent, patients. The four Mettnau spa clinics enjoy an international reputation and specialise in cardiovascular treatments. They are located on the idyllic Mettnau peninsular – an ideal setting for the spa’s motto, “healing through movement”.
Water-based activities and reconnaissance trips around the lower lake with its valuable conservation areas are a source of fascination. Radolfzell is committed to the preservation of nature and areas of natural beauty, as also demonstrated by the fact that numerous environmental and conservation associations are headquartered here and the famous “Naturschutztage” (a series of lectures, discussions, workshops and other activities dedicated to nature and conservation) are held here.
